Our employment program is called The Job Connection. The Job Connection serves individuals with with all types of disabilities and also supports their employers. The support provided is goal oriented, and based on a plan that the consumer generates. This plan (The Individual Habilitation Service Plan) is updated semi-annually and outlines how the consumer would like to see his or her career develop through identifying long-term and short-term goals.
These types of employment are available to PFI’s The Job Connection consumers.
Organizational Employment is an ongoing habilitation service. Consumers have the opportunity to choose work training in sheltered employment where they can receive full time job support in one or more of Parents and Friends businesses. PFI consumers choosing sheltered employment have the opportunity to work and learn in the Paul Bunyan Thrift Store and the Paul Bunyan Furniture Annex. These businesses provide interesting and valuable work and learning experiences for our consumers in addition to supplying needed goods and services to the local community.
Community Employment is employment in businesses in the community. A job developer works with consumers and local businesses to cultivate jobs that match consumer preferences and abilities with empoyer’s needs. An important part of the service is to provide a long-term job coach who facilitates job training and helps consumers, co-workers, and supervisors build and maintain solid working relationships. The Job Connection can provide on-going support for as long as needed.
The Job Connection’s newest employment opportunity is Group Employment. The Job Connection staff provides full support to small teams of employees who work at a variety of local businesses. Each group is trained and supervised in performing various types of work at each different site.
Besides job development and on the job support, The Job Connection is also available to provide Employment Preparation services before a consumer is employed.Staff can help potential employees through the application process by helping to prepare for interviews, make resumes and fill out applications. Vocational Assessment is used to identify skills, strengths and barriers, in order to assist people in choosing vocational goals. Also, Personal Vocational Social Adjustment is offered that provides one-on-one support in overcoming barriers to employment in order to help consumers achieve their vocational goals.
